University Fire Door Remedials Project.
Overview
Fusion Services were awarded the fire door remedials 2 years ago and we are now in our 3rd phase of the fire door remedials project. The Fire Door Remedials Project was initiated to enhance fire safety compliance within the existing student village. The project focused on improving fire resistance by addressing deficiencies related to fire doors and compartment lines.
Scope
- Compartment Lines:
- The project targeted 30-minute fire-resisting walls and 60-minute fire-resisting floors within the Firth Court Complex.
- Compartment lines were assessed, and necessary remedial works were carried out to ensure compliance.
- Fire Doors:
- Inspections were conducted on existing fire doors.
- Damaged or non-compliant fire doors were replaced or repaired.
- Correct functioning of fire door hardware (closers, hinges, latches) was verified.
Methodology
- Survey and Assessment:
- A comprehensive survey identified fire door deficiencies.
- Fire-rated doors were inspected for gaps, damage, and proper seals.
- Remedial Works:
- Fire doors were adjusted, repaired, or replaced as needed.
- Intumescent seals and other fire-resistant materials were installed.
- Hardware (locks, handles) was upgraded to meet safety standards.
- Testing and Certification:
- Post-remediation tests ensured fire doors met performance requirements.
- Certificates were issued for compliant fire doors.
Challenges
- Logistics: Coordinating works across multiple buildings without disrupting daily operations.
- Historical Context: Addressing fire door issues in older structures while preserving architectural integrity.
Conclusion
The Fire Door Remedials Project significantly improved fire safety within the student village. By enhancing fire door performance and ensuring compliance with fire resistance standards, the project contributes to the safety and well-being of occupants and assets.
Protecting our Future
When Fusion Services were awarded the fire door remedials 2 years ago, We were aware that this was a big step in protecting our future and also the future students at the accommodation of the university. We welcomed 3rd party inspections on the work we are undertaking .This along side our own accreditations, in our eyes, only helps ensure full building compliance.
We pride ourselves on the quality of our work but also on our ability to provide a service to an occupied building with minimum disruption to the occupants. The university accommodation has been more challenging than most with it being a multi occupancy. Also, it contains so many people leading active lives in their first years away from home there are numerous new challenges we faced. We rose to this challenge and our managers and installers were praised for their accommodating and positive attitude.

Constant support
During our time working alongside the on-site team at the university, We have offered our support in various areas. We consider our projects a collaboration to help them provide the best services they can to the students occupying the accommodations, and if we have the skills and assets to help them deliver this, we will prioritise that support. Due to this partnership, we have helped them deliver other key projects improving the quality of the accommodation across several sites.
